Smell that in the air … the country happily burning through money because it’s holiday time. What’s wrong is right and what’s right is wrong! Ke Dezemba boss!

That’s right. Expect no parking at shopping malls, queues snaking around corners as people wait to be seated at their favourite restaurants, and children running around everywhere.

If you’re in the queue to get to the beach, at least that comes with an amazing view!

On the bright side for those working during the festive season, you can enjoy the open road in the morning, getting to work stress-free because those on holiday are either away or still in bed, contemplating where to take their money next.

The extra half an hour you save by not being stuck in morning traffic will give you time to plan your weekend and public holiday obligations without a care in the world. Maybe squeeze in a full breakfast, with a cappuccino on the side, as a treat to yourself.

And as you chew on that, take a moment to look back and reflect on what Dezemba means to you. For some, it’s a turn-up month, and they will be partying, drinking and spending non-stop through the holidays to shake off the long year. For others, like Janet Berger, CEO of Flow Exhibitions, December means "escape and connecting time with family", packing up the city life and heading home.

Dezemba is the time to spend what you have without a care in the world. Find a summer fling to flit around with, or rekindle the flame, buy a new big (or small) item, go to a new destination or revisit your favourite getaway. Whatever you do, Jan-you-worry looms but somehow the spirit of Dezemba is always strong enough to make us forget.

We need a few weeks to forget how hard a year it’s been, the defeats, triumphs and shortcomings. Enjoy the braais, smiles and the carefree spirit in the air. Cheers to 2014!
