Train manufacturer Gibela’s Midrand offices have had a facelift.

The project, completed in early July, was a combination of branding, functionality and environmental problem-solving that is now turning heads and shading eyes – all at once.

“Going into this project, we had to address two key challenges for Gibela,” says Flow project manager Ros Caboz. “Firstly, we had to improve the visibility of Gibela’s signage, making it easily identifiable from a distance, especially for passing motorists on the highway. Secondly, the project tackled the issue of excessive sunlight that created discomfort and affected the productivity of the people in the building,”

Flow and longstanding supplier 1UP Exhibitions worked together to improve Gibela’s signage visibility while simultaneously addressing the issue of excessive sunlight entering the building through its large, west-facing glass windows.

Implementation of the project started with the removal of a garden in front of the building to accommodate the signage installation. A team of 12 then began the installation process, which ran from 18 June to 1 July 2024. This involved setting up three-tier scaffolding, arranging forklifts for moving materials and hiring a cherry picker to assist with sign placement.

The project also required illuminated signage on both the side and front of the building to ensure that it is seen easily at night from the highway that runs past it.

The new installation includes 3D moulded perspex signs with LED lighting on a dark grey sheet-metal background, decking with stainless steel anchors that mirrors the wooden decking design feature in the reception, and functional louvre decking shutters. These shutters, designed using data from an earlier sun study, now provide a more comfortable and productive work environment for Gibela employees by shielding them from the sun.

“Safety was important throughout the installation process. We had to ensure that the worksite was safely secured to protect other staff working on the premises,” adds another Flow project manager, Ella Marren. “The client also took great care to rezone valuable cycads from the gardens. The plants were secured and replanted elsewhere on the property.”

With the project now complete, Gibela has a brand-new and visually appealing facade that strengthens its brand identity and provides a more comfortable work environment. Says Gibela site and operations manager Andiswa Dikana, “Gibela would like to thank Flow for all the hard work you have put through to ensure the success of the branding project.”
