An enthusiastic bunch of Flowstars donned their best emoji faces in support of our client, Ster-Kinekor Entertainment, and joined the ranks of other “emojis” on Saturday 15 July at Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square to celebrate the launch of The Emoji Movie ahead of World Emoji Day on 17 July.

More than 120 people dressed up in cool and colourful emoji costumes, and interacted with shoppers and passers-by to raise awareness about The Emoji Movie, which hits the big screen in September.

What made Saturday’s occasion more special was that it formed part of a new world-record attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as emoji faces simultaneously across multiple venues. Spanning three continents, the record saw emoji faces inspired by The Emoji Movie appear in Dubai, Moscow, London, Dublin and São Paulo. The new record was confirmed by an adjudicator of Guinness World Records.

Nadine Rosslind, marketing manager for Sony Pictures, said: “The Emoji Movie is fantastic and entertaining. The yellow-faced emojis have become so much a part of popular culture, and we are sure that the upcoming movie will add to this phenomenon.”

World Emoji Day has been celebrated annually since 2014, and in 2015 it was Twitter’s top trending item on the day.

Sony Pictures Animation used World Emoji Day 2016 to announce TJ Miller as the voice behind Gene, the first cast member of The Emoji Movie. Other characters are voiced by Patrick Stewart (Poop), Sofia Vergara (Flamenca) and Anna Faris (Jailbreak), among others.

The Emoji Movie is due for release in Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro theatres in South Africa on 22 September 2017.
